DIGITAL ARTS & NEW MEDIA

January 18–February 11
Exhibit by DANM Visiting Scholar
The work of DANM Visiting Scholar Kim Byoung-Jin will be exhibited in the Porter Faculty Gallery. Professor Kim’s work, which focuses on redefining the visual identity of modern Korea, reflects the dichotomy that is at the heart of that country in the 21st century: its rich and ancient traditional culture juxtaposed with its progressive ambitions and cutting-edge technology. His  concepts emphasize the modernization of traditional Korean cultural images without sacrificing the strength of their original essences to more accurately represent the contemporary Korean cultural identity.
Kim is Art Director for two of the top graphic design studios in Korea, and is currently on sabbatical from his positions as Professor of Fine Art and Culture and Director of the Design Department at Kunkuk University in Korea.

SAVE THE DATE

Thursday–Sunday, May 4–7
UCSC Digital Arts and New Media (DANM) Festival
The DANM Festival will be a forum for the investigation of the boundaries and possibilities of digital art and new media. How have the roles of the artist and audience evolved in these new forms of art? How do the established disciplines such as the arts, computer sciences and engineering, and social sciences contribute to this rapidly evolving field? How do history, theory and criticism respond to the wide variety of new media practices?
The festival will explore these issues through exhibitions at The Museum of Art & History @ The McPherson Center and the Porter Sesnon Gallery, through film screenings in collaboration with the Santa Cruz Film Festival, symposia, performances and satellite events that will take place throughout April, May and June 2006. It will present the work of artists such as Jim Campbell, Paul DeMarinis and Camille Utterback, panels of expert speakers, and members of the DANM MFA Program.

For more information, visit http://danm.ucsc.edu/web/festival or contact DANM Festival Coordinator Elena Lledó at 831-457 2027 or elledo@ucsc.edu.
