SCRIPT TREATMENT

"DAVENPORT"

SCENE 1

The ocean ripples across the screen. It is early morning and fog covers the sea. Sounds of seagulls and bells can be heard. The bottom of a boat appears from the right hand side. The camera moves up the side of the boat and onto it's deck. Several other boats can be seen in a row behind the boat. It is a fairly small commercial fishing boat, a three man operation at most. It is a clean well kept boat. As we move along the boat, we come to a rope. We follow the rope along until we come across a body hanging from the rope. The body is of a young boy named ADAM QUINCY. He dangles from the rope, his body limp. He has a long sleeve shirt on. His pants and underwear are pulled down around his ankles, he hangs there with a naked mid section.

SCENE 2

A car drives past a sign saying "Welcome to Davenport". The car enters town and parks along the main street. A MAN exits the car, we only see his feet. It is a sunny morning. We follow the man's legs as he walks along the sidewalk. He opens a door and enters a restaurant. (camera takes on man's p.o.v). The man sits down and we see his face. A waitress approaches the man and asks him if he would like some coffee. Another waitress passes, camera follows her. We follow the waitress to a table of three

WOMAN 1

I heard the family had been having some financial troubles.

WOMAN 2

Me too, but why would someone hang your naked son for money? I think the boy might

 have been into drugs.

WOMAN 3

The boy was kind of weird, the whole family is kind of weird.

WOMAN 1

They were alright, I see them at church almost every sunday, their God fearing family.

WOMAN 2

I think he was murdered. I bet anoth fisherman killed the boy  'cause the father was movin' in on his territory.

The camera focuses on one woman eating. CUT TO: montage of same woman in the bathroom throwing up. CUT TO: back to the table where the woman continues to eat.

WOMAN 3

I wonder if the parents had a life insurance policy on the boy.

WOMAN 1

Ooh, that could be.

WOMAN 2

I don't know that boy had some weird friends. All these kids.

WOMAN 3

You just don't like kids.

WOMAN 2

That's not true I love . . .

WOMAN 1

Oh, Marge don't kid yourself. Well eithe

[1]r way, there was something fishy goin on with that Quincy boy. (Pause) No pun intended.

The three women laugh.

Suddenly one woman looks up and stops laughing, she nudges the woman next to her. A man in his mid forties enters the restaurant, TOM QUINCY. TOM sits down at a table, everyone in the restaurant looks at him in silence. He looks around, and everyone looks down. FADE TO BLACK.

SCENE 3

A woman in her mid forties, EVELYN QUINCY, stands in line at a super market checkout. She has several food and household items on the counter. In front of her, two young boys, MATT and SCOTT, around the age of 13 are purchasing six cans of whipped cream. Evelyn recognizes the boys as friends of her youngest son, Josh Quincy.

EVELYN

Hello boys.

MATT

(quietly) Hi Mrs.

Quincy.

SCOTT

(passively) Hello Mrs. Quincy.

EVELYN

Whats with all the whipped cream?

MATT

Oh. Um it's my sisters birthday.

EVELYN

Oh that's wonderful. Say happy birthday for me. (pause) Uh, we will be having a memorial service next week for Adam, will you boys be able to come?

MATT

Alright.

SCOTT nods his head.

EVELYN

Say hello to your mothers for me.

The boys nod their heads.

SCOTT

Bye Mrs. Quincy

MATT

Bye Mrs. Quincy

Matt turns away from Evelyn. The boys begin to walk away. Evelyn glances at Matt's backpack, and notices a porno magazine sticking out of it. She gives a look of disgust, then turns around to look at the woman behind her in line. The woman notices the magazine and gives a slight smile. CUT TO: montage of the woman with tied to her bed with scarves. CUT

TO: back to woman in line. The woman places a shrink wrapped whole fish on the counter, along with several other items. Evelyn looks at the fish with a blank emotionless stare.

SCENE 4

MATT and SCOTT leave the super market. they walk across the parking lot and along the sidewalk. A PRIEST in his early forties approaches the two boys.

PRIEST

Hello Scott, hello Mathew. How are you boys today?

MATT

We're alright father., Um just getting some groceries for my mom.

PRIEST

That's very nice of you. Scott, I did'nt see you and your family in service last week?

SCOTT (looking down)

Yeah. My mother was sick.

PRIEST

Oh, well do give her my condolences, and I hope to see you both in church this sunday.

Matt and Scott nod their heads.

PRIEST

Alright boys, I must be on my way. Enjoy yourselves.

MATT

Bye Father.

SCOTT

Bye Father.

The two parties walk in separate directions. As the Priest walks the porno magazine can be seen sticking out of Matt's backpack as he walks the other direction. The Priest approaches a

È church. In front of the church stands the SHERIFF. The Sheriff is a big man in his mid forties.

SHERRIFF

Good afternoon Father.

PRIEST

How are you today Sherriff?

SHERRIFF

Good. I wanted to ask you a few questions about Adam Quincy.

PRIEST (looks at his watch)

Alright. What can I tell you?

SHERRIFF

He an his family are members of your church right?

PRIEST

Yes, they come every week. Although Mr Quicy does'nt make it sometimes because of work.

SHERRIFF

Did you notice anytrhing weird about the family, or was Adam acting particularly different or anything lately?

PRIEST

No. Adam has always been pretty quiet, you know kind of a loner type. But he was a very honest and kind young man. His family is very close and they are strong supporters of the parish. To be honest I don't think anyone killed Adam, and he certainly did'nt seem like he would kill himself.

SHERRIF

Huh. Yeah.

PRIEST

Are things going alright, any leads or anyuthing?

SHERRIF

Well, you know. Everyone is pretty much sa[1]Yying the same thing. We really have no clue what happened, but we're still lookin and puttin the pieces together.

PRIEST (looks at his watch)

Its a tragic event. I wish you the best of luck Sherriff. If you would excuse I have to go work on this week's sermon.

SHERRIFF

Of course Father, thank you for your time.

PRIEST

Perhaps I will see you at church one of these days?

SHERRIF

Oh, I don't know about that. Take care Father.

PRIEST

You too.

The Sherriff walks away.

SCENE 5

The PRIEST enters the church and walks back to a small room. The room consists of a dresser, a mirror, a television,

˝small refrigerator, desk, and a couch. The Priest arranges the pillows on the couch, he then grabs a soda from the refrigerator. The Priest sits on the couch and turns on the television. He changes the channel to "Days of our lives", and comments on one of the characters. FADE TO BLACK.

SCENE 6

JOSH QUINCY, MATT, and SCOTT sit on a small hill next to an abandoned building. The building is now mainly one wall, which stands in the middle of a field. The boys sit and throw rocks at the wall,  as they pass cans of whip cream to each other and inhale the CO2. They discuss  Adam's death, and talk of the possibility of a serial killer in town.... The boys throw their empty whipped cream bottles against the wall. The bottles explode sending white oozing foam across the wall. After a while Josh and Matt decide they need to go home for dinner. Scott stays and continues throwing rocks at the wall. A few moments later Scott stands and walks about twenty feet. He drops his pants and underwear and begins to poop on the

ground. Scott removes a piece of folded paper from his pants pocket. He wipes his butt and pulls up his pants. Scott crumples up the paper and throws it to the ground. He then kneels down, pulls up the sleeve of his shirt, and smears a small amount of poop on his forearm. Scott pulls down his shirt sleeve and walks away.

SCENE 7

TOM, EVELYN, and JOSH sit in a dimly lit room. They are on three sides of a table. There is a place mat on the fourth side, but the seat is empty. There are plates of food in front of them, but they eat very little. The mood is somber and quiet.

SCENE 8

A group of kids around the age of fifteen sit on a hill overlooking the harbor. There are about three guys and two girls. They sit drinking sodas and smoking cigarettes. As they look a the boats and across the water, they discuss the loss of their friend, Adam. They say that that they can not believe that

Âanyone would murder him, and that he would never commit suicide. They arrive upon the notion that they may never know the truth of what happened to Adam.
