i.               Jay haskin

ii.

iii.            Doug is lying on the couch watching television and smoking a cigarette.  He is wearing blue jeans and has no shirt.  He is almost motionless, except for the few times in which he inhales, but even then lifeless gaze is not interrupted.  Forgetting that he must tend to his cigarette, a large amount of ash falls from the cigarette to the floor below.  Behind Doug are stairs leading upward, and to his side is a hallway leading back.  From this hallway emerges Jay, his housemate, dressed as though ready for work.

Jay:       (quite perturbed, yet used to this sort of thing) “Come on, use an ashtray once and a while.”

Doug does not respond.  Jay exits the frame to the right and returns with an ashtray.  He places it on the floor and cleans up the ash which Doug has previously dropped.  During this time, Chris descends the stairs.  Her steps lack confidence, as she is unfamiliar with her surroundings, and quite nervous with regards to her present situation.  She is wearing a large white button up shirt, and no pants.  As she nears the bottom, she notices that others are in the room and pauses.  Jay, amidst his cleaning, also notices that Chris is on the stairwell, and as to be polite, quickly diverts his eyes.  He stands and looks at Doug, understanding completely the situation at hand; however not entirely comfortable with it.

Jay:       “Well, ok.  I’m going to ... uh ... go to work now.  See you later.”

Jay exits.  Chris completes her descent down the stairs and enters the room.  Doug still does not notice her.  Moving to the couch on the adjacent wall, she discovers a pair of pants, a shirt, and shoes.  Not quite sure what to do, and looking to Doug for a response, yet receiving none, she puts on her pants and shoes.  Her hand moves as though to unbutton her shirt; however she hesitates, and instead just drapes the shirt from the couch over her arm.  She stands and looks at Doug.

Chris:    “I guess I should be going, too.”

            Doug offers no response.

Chris:    “Well, I’ll see you around then.”

            She exits.

iv.             Doug, Jay and Julie sit at a table in the corner of a bar.  Jay and Julie sit across from each other, as Doug sits between them, across from the camera.  The three all have beers, and Doug is smoking.  While Jay and Julie are talking, Doug is busy looking around the bar.

Julie:     “I don’t think that you should have to pay for my drinks anymore.  I have a job, too, you know?”

Jay:       “That’s not the point.  It’s the gesture, the act of giving.”

Julie:     (laughing) “Well then, you could stop buying me beers, and buy me something I want, like shoes.”

During this conversation, Chris enters the bar behind Doug and walks over to the counter.  She is wearing the outfit which she picked up from the couch in the previous scene.  Doug had followed her movement with his eyes as she entered, and when she stops moving, he slowly rises and heads over to talk to her.  She seems flattered, and the two talk briefly, then exit the bar.

v.              Doug is in the bathroom, with his blue jeans and no shirt.  He is looking at himself in the mirror, smoking and combing his hair.  As he does this, he seems to be flirting with his reflection.  When through with his hair, he leans over to rinse his face.  He looks up, and for a moment the flirtation is gone, but then he stands up, picks his cigarette back up, and shoots himself a look of confidence.

vi.             Doug exits a flower store downtown with a moderate bouquet of flowers.  He looks at his watch, and starts heading down the street.  From across the street, Chris comes running.  When she comes close to Doug, it is clear that he is startled.  He checks his watch.  She seems really excited to see him, and upon noticing the flowers, is incredibly overjoyed.  She takes them from Doug, and he checks his watch again.  Then she hugs Doug and whispers something in his ear.  He thinks for a second, checks his watch again, and then follows her out of the frame.

vii.           Jay and Julie enter the house carrying with them a plastic bag.  This time, the camera is pointed at the door, thus the stairwell is behind it.  Doug enters from the right and is dressed sharply.  He checks his watch.  Julie heads over and sits on the couch as Jay goes to place a video from the bag into the VCR.  Jay turns to Doug.

Jay:       “Good luck on your date.”

Doug:    “Yeah.”

            Doug exits.

viii.          Doug and Chris are lying in bed.  Chris is asleep, and Doug leans over to verify this.  Then sits up, dresses checking as to not wake Chris.  Doug checks his watch then exits.

ix.             Doug enters the bar again.  It is empty.  He looks around, checks his watch again, then sits at the bar and orders a beer.

x.              Jay and Julie are sitting on the couch.  Jay is asleep, and Julie is still watching the movie.  Doug enters, and looks disappointed.  He walks over and sits on the arm of the couch next to Julie to watch the film.  Julie briefly glances over at Doug, sighs in annoyance, then continues to watch the film.

xi.             It is morning.  Jay is still asleep on the couch.  The doorbell rings.  Jay wakes up and goes to the door.  It is Chris.

Chris:    “Hello.  Is Doug home?”

Jay:       “Yeah, I’ll get him for you.  Come on in.”

Jay and Chris enter the room, Chris sits on the couch, and Jay walks up the steps.  We hear a knock.

Jay:       “Doug, you have company.”

Jay returns down the stairs and sits next to Chris.  After a moment of waiting, Doug comes down the stairs. It is obvious that Doug has just awoken, as it takes him a moment to realize that Chris is in his house.  He greets her with a nod.

Chris:    “Did I come at a bad time?”

Doug hesitates, Jay assesses the scene, feeling uncomfortable

Chris:    “You were gone when I woke up.  I was worried.”

At this time Julie starts to walk down the stairs in a daze.  Visually, she is to mirror Chris in the opening scene.  Halfway down the stairs, she realizes the mistake she has made and pauses.  Doug spots her from the corner of his eye, and quickly diverts his eyes as to not call attention to her.  Jay notices Doug’s reaction, and understands the situation; however, not in its entirety.  Chris is oblivious to this, as she is waiting for Doug to respond.  After noticing Doug, Jay turns to Chris.

Jay:       “Do you want to go get breakfast?  It’ll give Doug some time to wake up and shower.”

Doug nods, and Julie quietly heads back up stairs.  Jay stands and beckons for Chris.  The two exit.  Doug hesitates, and rubs his face.  After this pause, he heads upstairs.

x.         Doug is standing outside of Chris’ apartment holding a similar bouquet of flowers to the one he had previously.  He stands still for a moment just outside her door.  He sets the flowers down and starts heading towards the camera, which is incredibly far away; however extraordinarily telephoto.  After walking for a short while, Chris opens her door and discovers the flowers.  After picking them up, she looks around, and then notices Doug quite some distance away.  She calls to him, but he does not respond.
