The Narrative
Contingencies web site allows participants to construct their own
narratives - at the intersection of chance and interpretation.
Participants are
encouraged to submit images and texts which will, over time, replace
those of the initial Narrative Contingencies data base. Through the
combined agency of user interaction and chance operations the data
base will continuously evolve -- eventually experiencing a total regeneration,
displacement or "sea change." A global state - the data
base - will emerge from the local interactions of random selectionand
individual acts of interpretation in the context of a constantly evolving
system. Any current state of the system will express the subjective
perspective of each and all of its participating users.
When language
and representation are structured from a single, dominant point-of-view,
the position of the subject remains fixed. If the point-of-view of
the symbolic can be distributed and multiplied - then experience itself
might be altered.
