The Band's swinging second season was highlighted with guest artists such as John Handy and Herb Gibson—and the FJPBB played to delighted audiences numbering upwards of 8,000. The Big Band under the direction of Dr. Karlton Hester brings together renowned Jazz musicians and embodies some of the greatest music educators in the northern California Bay Area.

Highlights of our third season include a performance at The University of California, Santa Cruz (in fall 2005) and the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band concert in San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre (featuring guest artist John Handy and our vocalist Denise Perrier) for the Opening Celebration & Concert HARLEM OF THE WEST: THE SAN FRANCISCO FILLMORE JAZZ ERA on Tuesday, February 7, 2006.

The Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band was established to honor the legacy of African American art, culture and life in the area. Its intention is to play a role in the economic revitalization of the Historic Fillmore Jazz District as a new destination point in San Francisco.
