Prevention of Injuries in the Young Dancer
Editors:
Ruth Solomon, Professor Emerita
John Solomon, PhD
Lyle J. Micheli, MD
ISBN: 978-3-319-55046-6 (Print) 978-3-319-55047-3 (Online)
Prevention of Injuries in the Young Dancer discusses numerous physical, psychological, and medical issues pertaining to the young dancer as they relate to injury prevention. Chapters on injury are arranged anatomically and cover etiology, diagnosis, treatment strategies, and rehabilitation. Additional chapters cover screening, nutrition, training technique, and the role of the physical therapist.
This comprehensive text addresses the unique needs of these athletes and stresses how their bodies differ in significant ways from those of adults, requiring that their training and clinical management be overseen by specialized personnel. The book opens with a discussion of the epidemiology of injury in the young dancer, followed by a description of screening procedures and a sample screening program. Physical therapy and resistance training are then covered, along with common conditions and injuries at the spine, hip, knee, and foot/ankle complex. There are chapters on the use of diagnostic and interventional ultrasound, nutrition and bone health, psychological matters such as anxiety, eating disorders, and peer relationships, and lastly the prevention of degenerative hip injuries.
Prevention of Injuries in the Young Dancer is an essential resource with regard to the challenges facing aspiring young dancers. It is relevant reading for dance medicine, sports medicine, and orthopedic professionals, as well as dancers, their parents, and especially those persons who promote their careers.

MICHELI CENTER MANUAL, FIRST EDITION
Edited by Ruth Solomon and John Solomon
This 365 page First Edition of the Micheli Center Manual contains 37 chapters divided into 3 sections: the First Section, Sport-Specific Injury, includes chapters on Basketball, Dance, Ice Hockey, Rugby, etc.; the Second Section deals with Injury-Specific Resources related to Ankle Sprains, Concussion, and The Athletes Spine. The 3rd Section is titled Issue-Specific Resources and covers such topics as Age-Related Training to Prevent Injury and Promote Health in Youth, Body Composition, Obesity, Physical Activity in Children, and Cardiovascular Evaluation of the Athlete. All chapters are heavily referenced and have an emphasis on the prevention of injury.
The Manual also contains an Author Index citing all authors represented.
This manual is intended for the use of the Micheli Center's “floor staff” which means those people who will do the various performance measurements on the athletes, and the physicians on duty who will refer to the manual when writing injury prevention prescriptions for those athletes.
The Manual serves a number of purposes; in general it addresses both the training/conditioning and injury prevention/treatment needs of the clients. It answers such questions as:
- How can we assess athletes' abilities in their sport?
- How can we determine the injuries for which they are most at risk?
- How can we help them reduce their risk for those injuries?
- How can we assess their progress (improved performance and reduced risk of injury) over time?

EAST MEETS WEST IN DANCE: Voices in the Cross-Cultural
Dialogue
Edited by Ruth Solomon and John Solomon
Over the last few decades a lively dialogue has evolved between
dance administrators, teachers, and performers in the United States
and Europe and their counterparts in various Asian and Pacific
Rim countries. East Meets West in Dance chronicles this development
in the words of many of its best known and most active exponents.
In the process it 1) deals theoretically with the promises and
pitfalls inherent in transplanting art forms from one culture
to another, 2) provides practical guidance for those who might
want to participate in this enterprise, 3) records in a general
way the history of the dance exchange to date, and 4) identifies
differences that are unique to specific cultures with regard to
such matters as the development of theatrical forms, arts education,
and the status of artists. This is a “first of its kind”
examination of a phenomenon that has already touched most people
in the arts community world-wide, and that none can afford to
ignore.
