Act II Scene 2

GEORGE and MARTA'S home

GEORGE (examining an unmarked package that has arrived): Hmm. Local postmark. Well, the birthdays coming... (He proceeds to open the box, looking for a note of explanation. Inside he discovers an Imperial Immersives Nine or II9 crown, identical to the one used in the immersive environment exhibit of the digital art museum.) Unbelievable. I ask him for a download, because you never know, and the guy sends me the whole damn exhibit.

(GEORGE puts the apparatus on with some difficulty.)

GEORGE: Well, I'm sure there'll be a return address on the invoice.

We are introduced to an immersive environment that engages GEORGE a great deal more than the one he found so perplexing in the museum. Now when he moves through space, we see what he sees projected on the screen(s). In fact, as he walks around the audience, small cameras mounted on the headgear capture audience images that are mixed live with previously recorded images. In this particular sequence, the immersive environment simulates the corridor of gallery displays of the digital museum we saw in Act I, Scene 3. GEORGE moves on stage, causing the view to advance through the corridor halls.

PROCESSED VOICE (underneath the visuals described above): Love should grow up like a wild iris in the fields,

GEORGE: I...this is....

PROCESSED VOICE: unexpected, after a terrible storm, opening a purple

mouth to the rain, with not a thought to the future,

GEORGE: My god, it's triggering the same...what IS this?

PROCESSED VOICE: ignorant of the grass and the graveyard of leaves

around, forgetting its own beginning.

GEORGE (still in shock and amazement): We were walking down this very hall (he turns and the images on screen mirror his new body position). The colors are spot on. The archway, the glass case on my left...everything. (He turns his body to where MARTA previously stood, looking around for her. The 3D world on screen reacts to this turn but does not reveal a companion.) We were...but now it's...me.
