Before the performance, audience members should be invited to make a short audio recording (one minute maximum) in response to this prompt: "Tell me something you need to talk about with your romantic partner, something that is important to you and significant for your relationship." A minimum of five such recordings need to be captured.

The Characters

GEORGE, an overfed, fortyish cyberart collector, one who makes his living in the dematerialized world of data archiving and exchange.

MARTA, almost 30, an up-and-coming artist in the experimental sound/new media scene. University educated but street savvy. She knows a smattering of Spanish because she was raised around it, but also because her circle knows Spanglish like Twentieth Century New Yorkers incorporated Yiddish words into the dialect.

COURTIER 1, an elder and traditionalist member of the court

COURTIER 2, a member of the court with integrity, if a little hot-headed

COURTIER 3, a young woman who is enraptured with beauty, whether in the palace, the forest, or in the world of music and dance.

MAIDEN, played by the actor playing COURTIER 3, made distinct with an apron or other kitchen accoutrement.

EMPEROR, played by the actor playing GEORGE, made distinct via an imperial robe and crown.

LORD-IN-WAITING, an aristocrat, senior aide to the Emperor

NIGHTINGALE, a singer. Dressed in a grey formless cloak that should allow her to reveal more of herself when she is moved to do so. She is alluring because of her formidable musical talent as well as her grounded connection to the natural world. She radiates the sensual appeal that comes from unabashedly claiming her birthright, not from flashy dress or make-up.

MECHANICAL NIGHTINGALE, a machine played by a human costumed to resemble the under-the-cloak dress of the NIGHTINGALE. However, where the NIGHTINGALE is tastefully costumed, the MECHANICAL NIGHTINGALE is all sleaze and flash.

DEATH, an electronic fabrication

PROCESSED VOICES, electronic fabrications
