HIROSHIMA UNDERGROUND MALL PROJECT

Site-specific Art and Technology Concept

Developed by

Nobuho Nagasawa and Glen Allen

July 20, 1999

Concept

• Integrate art elements into the infrastructure, combined with the exploration of new technologies and interactive interface design to provide an identity of the site and to promote the vitality within the underground mall complex.

• Layers of human consciousness translate through symbols, time, history and the subconscious.

• Create a sense of community through shared interaction within the underground mall into a shared human experience.

This can be achieved through images and metaphors that will be created throughout the underground mall complex. A series of interactive art and technology elements will be installed in the East, West and the Central Plaza. This will support an increase of pedestrian traffic through community-participants’ interactive networking.

The elements that will be connecting the entire underground mall complex will be the international symbols and signs of human communication. These symbols and signs will be cut out in stainless steel(either by laser, or water jet) and will be installed as an inlay into the wall. If applicable, these inlays will continue throughout the floor surfaces to create a patterned walkway that will function as a "way finding" element.

Western symbols and signs for communication will start from the western wall and the eastern from east. These symbols and signs will meet and mix together to form new symbols at the central plaza.

The entire floor of the designated area (in yellow color code)will be fabricated by a series of large colored terrazzo tiles which will replace the granite/patterned veneer. The terrazzo tiles will be manufactured by a carefully controlled formula using various computer chips as one of the additive materials. This will enforce the overall design metaphor of communication and technology.

Special effects will be achieved through the use of technology and the lighting system throughout the mall complex. All the video monitors will flash for a few seconds annually on August 6th at 8:15 a.m. to commemorate the Atomic Bomb that was dropped in Hiroshima in 1945.

West Plaza-1

• A place for rejuvenation of spirit and the body

• Sound garden

• Special Seating: a place for rest and calming

• Colorful lighting

Floor #1 (see drawing -30)

• Terrazzo floor: Terrazzo with various computer chips inlay instead of granite/patterned veneer

• Stainless steel inlay: symbols of contemporary communication

Wall #2 (see drawing -30)

• Rejuvenating Water Fall with three *ionizers

• Sandblasted glass wall fountain with back-lit effect instead of granite polish finish

(* ionizer: a modern device used to generate ions similar to the ions created by the ocean this is proven to be good for human well-being).

• Harmonic Sound effect: Sound will be recorded and played back from 4 different locations around the seating in this sound garden only from one direction at a time (sound effect to be determined later in the design development phase)

• Comfortable seating

Column #3(see drawing -30)

• Two Columns with small LCD panels for interactive communication

Ceiling #4(see drawings -44 and -82)

• Special calming lighting effect that changes the mood of the plaza

West Plaza-2

Floor #5(see drawing-29)

• Terrazzo floor: Terrazzo with various computer chips inlay instead of granite/patterned veneer

• Stainless steel inlay: ancient symbols of communication

Wall #6(see drawing -29)

• Terrazzo wall with various computer chips inlay instead of artificial sandstone

• Interactive communication wall puzzle(a collage of western communication symbols displayed in large puzzle format: these symbols are designed as a communication tool for people wishing to interact with the symbols on this wall. The pieces will be non removable magnetic pieces. These can be lifted and moved but not removed.

Wall #7 and #8 (see drawing -29)

• Terrazzo wall with various computer chips inlay instead of artificial sandstone

• Stainless steel inlay: ancient symbols of communication

South Plaza

Floor #11(see drawing -31)

• Terrazzo floor: Terrazzo with various computer chips inlay instead of granite/pattern veneer

• Stainless steel inlay: symbols of communication

Wall #12(see drawing -31)

• Terrazzo wall with various computer chips inlay instead of granite/JP

• Stainless steel inlay: symbols of communication

Central Plaza

• A place for gathering, networking: Starting point of information

Floor #14(see drawing -32)

• Granite/patterned veneer as planed with stainless steel inlay: The symbols and signs of communication from east and west will meet and mix together to form new symbols at the central plaza.

Walls #15(see drawing -32)

• Video Strata: interactive seven way video and audio for exploring by children and adults.

This video will be moving at all times, sometimes in fast motion. This helps people passing by realize the activity of the earth that is happening all around them above and below.

• Three LCD panels will be installed at the three outer walls. (optional: AV. hook-ups to plug-in cameras for interactive viewing, Internet connection).

• Each images will be related to the five elements of nature: earth, air, water, fire and space

• Eight projectors(with internal rotation system) installed in the ceiling will project a series of images of clouds from center out to the pavement (custom made *gobos will be manufactured).

(* gobos: thin, heat tempered metal or glass filter that will be placed in front of the projector that will give sharp projected images. DERKSEN Graphic Projector System makes a high quality Projector).

North Plaza

Floor #16 and #17(see drawing -33)

• Terrazzo floor: Terrazzo with various computer chips inlay instead of granite/pattern veneer

• Stainless steel inlay: symbols of communication/nature such as snowflake pattern never repeats itself they are infinite variables.

Wall #18 (see drawing -33)

• Fountain - "time" as a metaphor, commemorating "Hiroshima"

• Special Lighting for the fountain

Ceiling #19 and #20(see drawing -47)

Additional Art Element Potential:

• Elevator

- I have a design concept I would like to apply for the elevator door.

I will ask Yosuyo whether it’s worth considering.
