Eric Burdon and The Animals: The Twain Shall
Meet (1968)
MGM 4537
Includes:
This song includes the lyrics:
The Byrds and the Airplane did fly
Oh, Ravi Shankar's music made me cry
The Who exploded into fire and light
Hugh Masakela's music was black as night
The Grateful Dead blew everybody's mind
Jimi Hendrix, baby believe me, set the world on fire
His Majesty, Prince Jones, smiled as he moved among the crowd
Ten thousand electric guitars were grooving real loud
Since 1968 this song has appeared on a number of Animals and Eric
Burdon releases, as well as on various compilations and cover versions.

Studio musicians attempting to recreate the Watkins Glen festival.
The Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band and The Band do not play on this
LP. JS
King's Road Watkings Glen lp is a stitch. Barely compentent playing
and horrendous vocals are the cornerstone, but even funnier is the identical
canned audience noise that appears out of nowhere at the beginniing and
end of each song. "Thank you!" the band yells to their faux audience after
each tune. "All right, "Casey Jones!" the band shrieks as they start that
song (Can you imagine the Dead actually doing this?). Musically, every
song on the album attempts to be faithful to the studio original - odd
since this is supposed to document live performances - but they're all
abbreviated. Entire verses are missing from "Truckin'" and the famous
jam in the Allmans' "Whipping Post" lasts less than 90 seconds. Although
the Dead did play "Truckin'" at Watkins Glen, they didn't play either "Uncle
John's Band" or "Casey Jones"! So, for a poorly researched, terribly mastered
document of a famous concert, recorded by people who weren't there, playing
songs that weren't perfomed, this isn't so bad. EL

Hunter,
Robert: Tales of the Great Rum Runners (June 1974)
LP: Round Records: RX-101
CD: Rykodisc:
RCD 10158
Includes:
-
"It Must Have Been the Roses"
Hunter's debut lp sports his version of this Hunter/Hunter tune and
came out only months after the Dead first started playing the song (Feb.
1974) and a few months before the Dead recorded it for Steal Your Face
(Oct. 1974). The original mix of this release is also available on the
out-of-print Robert Hunter lp Promontory Rider: A Retrospective Collection
(1982; Relix Records: RRLP2002; RRCD
2002); a poorer quality remix is on the reissue of Tales via GDM
or Rykodisc. DD/DL/EL This song also appears
on the 1993 European release Relix Sampler (RSXCD 101) and on the
single "Rum Runner" / "IMHBTR" (Round Records RX 4505) from this lp. MD

a- "Lady with a Fan"
b- "Terrapin Station"
c- "Ivory Wheels/Rosewood Track"
d- "Jack O'Roses"
-
"Prodigal Town"
In addition to four new originals, Robert Hunter's third solo album
features "Box of Rain," "Ruben and Cherise" (complete with pretentious
new spelling and an extra verse), "Friend of the Deveil" (with an extra
verse), "Stagger Lee" (the title expanded to include the female prtagonist's
name), and a "Terrapin" that features two 'chapters' foreign to the Dead's
version - especially cool is the "Ivory Wheels/Rosewood Track" section
with lyrics set to the "Terrapin Transit" music. These songs are a privileged
peek into Robert Hunter's limitless imagination. The lp was originally
released in England on the Dark Star label, then debuted stateside on Relix
Records. Both lps are now out of print. EL

EP - Dischord 1
Includes:
This entire EP was included on the 1981 lp Dischord
1981: The Year in Seven Inches (Dischord 14, released on cd in
1993). This unkind punk rock tune goes like this:
Deadhead, deadhead, take another toke
Deadhead, deadhead, you're a lousy joke
Friend of the devil, who you trying to kid?
Friends of the devil are dead like Sid
I'll be grateful when you're dead
I'll be grateful when you're dead
I'll be grateful when you're dead
So don't stick around too long
Riding that train high on cocaine
The music's really lousy, the fans are a pain
Troubles behind, troubles ahead
The only good deadhead is one that's dead

A version of this song appears on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore,

It's a miserable Friday night
I'm so lonely
And nobody'll give me a ride
To the Grateful Dead concert...Oh rats!
...
If I was at the concert right now, I'd be ripped!
We were free when we were born
I could tighten my headband for an extra rush
During Jerry's guitar solo
Then I could go to a midnight show of 200 Motels!

Meat Puppets: Meat Puppets (1982)
SST (mini-lp)
Reissued February 23, 1999 by RYKODISC
as RCD 10466
Includes:
Recorded in 1981 and originally released as a mini-lp in 1982, this
band has receieved the kind attention of the folks at Rykodisc and has
been expanded to include 18 bonus tracks! The Ryko release is an "enhanced
cd" including Meat Puppets video from early 1983 by San Francisco's Target
Video group at their studio. The vocals on this cd are slurred more than
sung. The guitar playing is slurred too, but if you're open to very primitive,
very loud punk rock, this will be your cup of tea. JS/EL

This cd omits three songs ("Built For Comfort," "House of Wax," &

Relix cd). It includes two tunes, "Gommorah" and "Show Boat," not on any
previous release. % indicates with Steve
Kimock on guitar. Note that Greg Anton (d) also played on many of these
tracks; Anton and Kimock later formed Zero.
A soulful "ITALTLITATTC," a fair "Knockin'," and a good "Scarlet."
I recommend this release of the bunch as it's got better (and more accurate)
notes than the Relix release and includes a nice rendering of Jerry's "Gommorah."

Robert Hunter: Live '85 (1985)

Includes:
AMG REVIEW: Though
this concert album featured a number of songs associated with the Grateful
Dead--"Easy Wind," "Franklin's Tower," and "Jack Straw"--heard in acoustic
solo versions by lyricist Robert Hunter, the rudimentary nature of the
recording (the sound isn't much better than a bootleg) marred the performance,
making this an expendable album. -- William Ruhlmann DD
The first line of this "Jack Straw" is altered to "I just jumped the
watchman, Jack Straw, right outside the fence" - Shannon, naming his companion
which emphasizes the dialog element of the song. Hunter slows down "IMHBTR,"
calling it "Rose/Rose" and adding an extra verse that's not even in his
lyric book. "Easy Wind" is closer to the Mississippi delta version Hunter
envisioned than the Workingman's Dead powerhouse. "Franklin's Tower"
has a very mellow tempo and the chorus is abbreviated to "Roll away...Roll
away..." until "...the dew" is sung at the very end. EL

"Sugar Magnolia" appears on side two of this third Pop-O-Pies

and 1984 releases. IS/JS/DL
"Sugar Magnolia" runs backward until the "Sunshine Daydream" section
whose lyrics simply consist of the words "Sunshine Daydream" yelled over
and over. Conceptual to a fault, this rendition isn't as funny as Callahan's
earlier takes of "Truckin'," but it could have been. The lyrics, played
forward, are:
Goin' down the road feelin' bad
Goin' down the road feelin' bad
Okay I feel like snorting a line
Hang on Steve get into place man
One-two-three-four same three chords
Sugar magnolia blossoms are blooming
The bed's unhappy but I don't fuckin' care
Threw my baby into the river
And she nearly came back for air
She's got everything delightful
She's got everything I want
Takes the wheel when I get car sick
Buys me a coffee when I speed
Sometimes when the cuckoo's cryin'
When the moon is halfway to town
I go out and I walk around
I've heard that Pop-O-Pies' complete recordings were released on a single
cd, but I haven't found it anywhere. Meanwhile, the record label still
has Joe's Third Record (and Joe's Second Record) in stock.

AMG REVIEW: Eclecticism
reigns supreme here, on his first full exploration of pop music covers
and Grateful Dead-style jamming. -- Myles Boise.
David Gans joins in on "Mason's Children" and Hank Roberts sings the
words to "The Other One" with his cello, tucking it in between the two
"Dark Star" verses. Kaiser's freak-out guitar work in the wild jamming
on this 30-minute-plus song goes places the Dead's "Dark Star" never even
approached. As the song closes Robert Hunter's voice rises to recite the
'mystery lyrics' from the original version. After toying with the "Cryptical"
theme, the song fades out to the opening strains of "Wharf Rat". "Dark
Star"/"The Other One" on the cd is a longer, different version than the
one on the lp. The cd features five bonus tracks, including three Captain
Beefheart (Don van Vliet) covers. EL

A tougher sounding version than most are used to, but done with style.
If you came to the Dead via hard rock you'll probably like it. DL
This 'unplugged' cd by a heavy metal band includes a "Truckin'" whose
verses are out of order and mutated into metalisms such as:
What in the hell ever happened to Sweet Jane
She lost her marbles, you know the chick ain't the same
Livin' on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine
All a friend can say is "Ain't it a bitch!"
Even heavy metal detractors should give this cd a listen. To date this
is the only cover of a Grateful Dead song by a heavy metal band, but the
possibilities are enticing ("Victim or the Crime" by Metalica?). EL
An acoustic concert taped in Philadelphia during the Summer,
1990, it includes a shortened version of "Truckin'" (final chorus > "...Sweet
Jane..." > the next verse's chorus > bridge with a few alterations) on

the long length of this "Franklin's" fool you; only the lyrics of the song
are familiar and there are no spacey guitar james here. Careful listeners

AMG REVIEW: (Best-of-Artist
- First Pick) Subtitled "Live 1990," [sic] A Box Of Rain is drawn largely
from the December 1990 tour Robert Hunter undertook as a promotional effort
for his newly published book of collected lyrics, also called A Box Of
Rain. (Three tracks are studio recordings.) This
is Hunter acoustic, devoting himself almost exclusively to songs co-written
by Jerry Garcia and originally recorded by the Grateful Dead. Dead fans
can hear the lyricist's versions of the title song, "Scarlet Begonias,"
"Jack Straw," "Brown-Eyed Women," "Deal," "Ripple," and other Dead favorites.
Hunter sings in a throaty baritone that effectively presents the songs
in an unadorned way. A Box Of Rain makes a good
addition to a Dead Head's collection and serves as an introduction to a
performer who has a body of non-Dead material in a similar vein.
-- William Ruhlmann
As Hunter says: "The nine live tunes are from my December '90 tour.
Direct recordings were made of all the shows but audience tapes cut on
Dr. Sam's DAT recorder (last night of the tour, The Warfield, S.F.) were
generally juicier than the board tapes. The three board tapes I did select
were "Deal" from the same night, recorded by Chris Kathman, and "Franklin's
Tower" and "Space" from Boston, recorded by Bill Blaine. The three studio
cuts that begin and end the album were engineered by yours truly. All cuts
on the album are 2-track stereo without overdub. Joe Gastwin EQ'd, plucked
some clicks and pops off the tracks and smoothed the transitions during
mastering." IS
"Franklin's Tower" and "Space" are from Boston on November 24, 1990.
The remaining songs were recorded at the Warfield. "Deal" is from a soundboard
tape and the other songs from an audience tape. JS
A few lines from "Liberty" appear at the end of "Promontory Rider."

"Scarlet Begonias"
The only listing here to appear on a release with a parental advisory(!),
this is an interesting ska-type version which includes an additional set
of lyrics:
It was the summer of love, I thank the stars above
because a woman took the lovin' over me
and just to gain her trust I bought a microbus
because I sold off all my personal property
A tight tie-dyed dress, she was a psychadelic mess
we toured through the north, south, east, and west
we sold some mushroom tea, we sold some extacy
we sold some nitrous, opium, acid, heroin, and pcp
and now I hear the police coming after me
yes now I hear the police coming after me
The one scarlet with the flowers in her hair
she's got the police coming after me
Perhaps also of interest is the pronounciation of 'police' as 'PO-lice'
a la "Masterpiece." This tune also appears on Step On It: Best Of The
Ska Parade Radio Show (A to Y, 1995). DL
This reggaefied "Scarlet" is a wild ride. They drop the "In the thick

rap section above - a brilliant parody of tourhead lifestyle. EL

From the press release for this album, her comments on "Box

left me - this has always been my favorite." Dated 1991. IS
This sweet version begins with the chorus, like the "Easy
Wind" on Phil's Fallout CD. Holland sounds like a cross between Sade
and Bruce Hornsby. DL
Holland rearranges the lyrics to ruinous effect, turning the "And it's
just a box of rain, I don't know who put it there..." verse into a chorus
she repeats a total of four times. For absolute completists only. EL

Oh come all ye Grateful Deadheads to the concert
Oh come Grateful Deadheads and camp in the street
Bring rolling papers, don't forget your sleeping bags
Oh come get us some floor seats
We followed them for four weeks
Oh come get us some floor seats, to see the Lord
Come all ye hippies, throwbacks to the 60s
Paint flowers on your van and don't wash your feet
Wear your bell-bottoms and your tie-died t-shirts
Oh come let us adore them. We quit our day jobs for them
Oh come let us adore them. Garcia's the Lord

"Pasta On The Mountain" (Lyrics: Vince Herman; Music: Mickey Hart)
It's four in the morning, you're wandering round the street
You ain't got no money, you got nothing to eat
Wonder where you'll get that box of the kindly mac and cheese
You been wanting to bridge that Bert, you got to get off the street
Head on up to the mountains, just a bit to the west of town
You're gonna find them pasta bushes, just growing from the ground
The kindest pasta that you have ever seen
All over the mountains, growing everywhere for free
Chorus
Talk about the pasta, pasta on the mountain
Talk about the pasta, pasta on the mountain
Talk about the pasta, pasta on the mountain
Talk about the pasta, pasta on the mountain
Mary had a little lamb's breath that she did grow
Everywhere that Mary went the [KGB] did flow
Summers in the mountain, winters in the farm
Tending to her pasta, Mary doing no one harm
[chorus]
You don't need al fredo or some other cheesy sauce
You'll find the pasta bushes growing [??]
You don't need no money, forget your job in town
Head on up to the mountains, pick the pasta from the ground

AMG REVIEW: The Bobs
have made a career out of teetering on the edge of being too cute; on their
second album of a cappella cover songs, they
went right over the top. While the less sanctimonious lovers of the '60s
may have appreciated their takes on Cream's "White Room," the Jimi Hendrix
Experience's "The Wind Cries Mary," and The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields
Forever" (the more sanctimonious would have muttered, "Are these guys kidding
or what?"), applying their tribute/parody approach
to material that had long-since acquired camp status--the Trammps'
"Disco Inferno" and Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?"--added little to
the fruitiness of those songs, and when The Bobs decided to approach songs
that were already outright comic or ironic -- Randy Newman's "Lonely At
The Top," Leonard Cohen's "Bird On a Wire" (here combined with "Surfin'
Bird"), and They Might Be Giants' "Particle Man" -- all they achieved was
redundancy. On the other hand, their performance
of The Grateful Dead's "The Golden Road" rescued a lost '60s classic.

Jimmy Buffett: Fruitcakes (May 1994)
MCA 11043
Includes:
AMG REVIEW: On his
first new studio album in five years, Buffett starts out talking about
an investment banker, an appropriate concern for this sun-bleached entrepreneur.
Soon enough, the sprung calypso rhythms kick in, and you can imagine the
Parrotheads swaying and chuckling along, especially when Buffett indulges
in the kind of comic raps common to his stage shows. He
also covers the Grateful Dead's "Uncle John's Band," one more appropriation
in his careful observation of that band's marketing plan. There's
also a cover of the Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon," a wealthy man's lament, which
is uncomfortably on target. But even with half a decade to come up with
original material, Buffett hasn't gotten much to add to his usual sun-and-sand
philosophy, and for all his millions he remains a pleasant, but distinctly
minor, singer-songwriter. -- William Ruhlmann DL

Gallant, Joe & Illuminati: Code of
the West (1994)
Scratchy Records
Which? Records; PO Box 659;
Village Station; NY, NY 10014
Includes:
Joe writes that his "music became gradually more knotty, thicker
and layered (a reviewer called it as dense as a dwarf star, yet remarkably
unconvoluted"). This "layered" aspect, coupled with my lifelong involvement
with sound design (playing train whistle SFX records in my backyard at
age 5 to winning an Emmy in 1996), shows itself on 1994's
"Code of the West." It took me 2 1/2 years to complete, and it features
61 performers, intricate soundscapes and evocative text (concerning the
pervasiveness and effects of televised imagery) interwoven through Latin,
ska, reggae, rock, bebop, opera, free jazz, and pulse-orchestral episodes.
It's chock-full of surprises-tap dancers, soap opera actors, a former adult-film
star, downtown poets and opera singers all help give voice to this Altman-esque
undertaking. I'm currently pressing more copies of it, so it will soon
be available at Illuminati gigs. "Code" also contains
my arrangement of the Dead's "Unbroken Chain," which I did as a Christmas
1993 gift for them."

Garcia's Finger (unreleased)")
Remember "Black Hole Sun"? This odd, ambient tune comes from the those
guys and was issued on two releases relating to their 1994 cd Superunknown:
1. This CD+ "contains live and studio videos, tour photos, intense
animation sequences and a graphic design perfectly suited to Soundgarden."
Alternately, it's been described
as featuring "a photo collection, videos for all four Superunknown-era
singles and various other videos, stills, hidden features and deadfalls."
The Soundgarden site
indicates that this was "an instrumental collage that was recorded particularly
for the CD-Plus and used there as musical texture for many of the experiences.
On this audio CD, the piece is presented as a whole, and proves that Soundgarden
weaves as good an ambient track as anybody. The music suggests imagery
without being cute, and has a shifting undercurrent that is more than a
suggestion of dangerous energy just out of reach."
2. The song also appears on this audio-only EP cd of some of the music
from Alive in the Superunknown CD+ above.

Recorded live in New York City, this bizzare tribute to female deadheads
came about after a:
Girl from University of Kentucky came on board band's Chevy van and
travelled with band back to Los Angeles. Got too stoned at Dead Show at
Oakland Colliseum. Accidently forgot her in the (hurling) in the ladies
bathroom. Three car loads full of hippies all thought she was in one of
the other two cars. Got to Fresno realized she was left behind. Still went
on to Los Angeles.
Lyrics:
She said "I'd have never imagined"
As she lit another hit and inhaled it
"I'd be travlin' with the band hey shit happens
goddamn it I'm a big girl I'll make it!"
Somewhere out there back in Kentucky
Where I played guitar so hard to get money
Down there in the mosh pit and crazies
I saw this long legged blonde little baby
She's my pretty skinny dead headed girl . . .
Yeah somewhere out there back in Kentucky
A man is crying "where is my baby?"
Man if I were you I'd bet money
She's lying here so pretty and naked
She's my pretty skinny dead headed girl . . .
She said "I'd have never imagined
Such a tiny weenie square piece of paper
Could make the dead like sound so outrageous
I guess I'll be your dead head baby" I said "No honey
You're my pretty skinny dead headed girl . . .
Yeah somewhere near the end when old Jerry
Sang Johnny B. Goode and said goodnight'
She said she had to go to the bathroom
I guess I just forgot to wait for her
She was my pretty skinny dead head ah girl . . .

The B-side to the single "Piss Up A Rope" from 12 Golden Country
Greats, this song was written in memory of the Man and is not on the
cd. A sweet, ol' country tune (incl. slide guitar) with tribute lyrics:
I picked up my things and went outside
The man that I loved up and died
I couldn't believe after all this time
Never knew the man, but he was a good friend of mine
So long, I'll see you down that long, dark river
Or floating on that lining in the sky
I'm lucky, lucky enough to have heard you play your song
So long, Jerry, so long
We'll always be together
Rolling down the track
Always and forever
Never looking back
Got my guitar and went to the river
Saw a lot of people just dancing around
I took off my shirt and jumped in the water
(You) always flew so high, now you've finally left the ground
So long, I'll see you down that long, dark river
Or floating on that lining in the sky
I'm lucky, lucky enough to have heard you sing your song
So long, Jerry, so long. So long, Jerry, so long.

Norma Waterson: Norma
Waterson (1996)
HNCD 1393
Hannibal
Includes:
AMG REVIEW: It may
have taken nearly 30 years for someone to suggest a Norma Waterson solo
project, but the outcome was well worth the wait. Waterson's eponymous
titled debut, with the exception of "There is a Fountain in Christ's Blood,"
isn't the traditional collection some would expect, but is filled with
material from contemporary writers which makes it much closer in sound
to the folk-rock of an artist like Richard Thompson. The
record kicks off with a beautiful reading of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's
"Black Muddy River" and rolls through a range of songs by the likes
of Thompson, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, Ben Harper and Norma's sister
Lal. The backing is sympathetic throughout, mixing Martin Carthy's intricate
acoustic guitar with Richard Thompson's lyrical electric work, Danny Thompson's
bass, Roger Swallow's drums and bits of violin from Eliza Carthy. It would
be easy for such an all-star band to outshine a lesser talent, but it's
Norma Waterson's world-weary alto that instills the songs with a timelessness
and gives them real life. -- Brett Hartenbach
This song also appears on Women of the World (Manteca 18; Nov.
2000). MD
Immodestly billed as "one of the world's great voices," this version
is characterized by sparce instrumentation and lovely backing vocals, though
Waterson herself didn't do much for me. DL
A founding member of the '60s British folk group the Watersons, Norma
Waterson began her solo career in her fifties. This stunning debut album
is filled with covers originally by artists as varied as Ben Harper, Billy
Bragg, and Richard Thompson, who adds his subtle guitar to the entire disc.
The best cuts are lovely arrangements of Elvis Costello's "The Birds Will
Still Be Singing" and the Dead's "Black Muddy River." Waterson didn't
know the song was the last Jerry ever performed live, yet her silky smooth
voice is tinged with sadness. One of the finest late Dead covers. The
Hannibal label is distributed by Rykodisc.

1999 CD: Sony International 484180
Includes:
"K", the mystical letter that is also the title of Kula Shaker’s debut
album, has topped the charts in London and is now meandering it’s way through
the U.S. population. The album is action packed with
psychedelic ’60s rhythms and deep, spiritual Sanskrit mantras. Not to mention
the tribute song to Jerry Garcia entitled "Grateful When You’re Dead/Jerry
Was There" and the mystical "Tattva" that was released to U.S. radio.
Source
Amidst the blues-drenched guitars and the Hindi chanting, the band is hard
at work building something spiritual and sensual. Kula Shaker isn't afraid
of a tamboura, using the exotic instrument on several tracks. Nor
is it afraid to be linked with the Grateful Dead, eulogizing that band
in the track "Grateful When You're Dead/Jerry Was There." But Kula
Shaker is no freewheeling "jam" band; there's a precision to the musicianship
on this record that cannot be ignored. CDNOW
"Grateful When you're Dead":
I'm painting, I paint a picture in you're mind
If you're driving roads to suicide, I know you can sympathise
If you're love is a cheatin', and you're blinded by the pain
You're honeymoon in summer is a picnic in the rain...
You'll be grateful when you're dead, grateful when you're dead
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.
I'm shaking, I shake the spear before you're eyes
Well if you know you're history, you will read between lines
If you're waiting for a vision, to illuminate you're mind
To leave this world of misery, to leave it all behind
You'll be grateful when you're dead, grateful when you're dead
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.
"Jerry was There":
Jerry was there, Jerry was there (Many times)
Oh I'm tellin you man Jerry was there, you could feel his presence
everywhere
(repeat)
"I've seen him ma - looked me right in the face."
This tune, titled merely "Grateful When You're Dead," also appears on Hey
Dude (1996?). The Japanese import of K also lists only "Grateful
When You're Dead." Whether these releases also include "Jerry Was There"
is not known. DL

the young Tim Buckley; and her melodies are the aural equivalent of smoky,
tantalizing aromas emanating from a soul kitchen.” -- Greg Linder (Boulder

More cd. James Brown stopped his classic mid-way to ask for a "thirty-second

From the liner notes: The most poignant moment of the Concert probably
came when Bruce Hornsby paid tribute to Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia
who had passed away just weeks earlier. A close friend of the Dead - who
was inducted into the Hall in 1994 - and auxiliary member of the band in
recent years, Hornsby began his emotional set with a moving rendition of
"I Know You Rider." As Hornsby told the audience, "This is a big night,
and it's exciting, but it's hard for me to be so celebratory because the
main reason I'm here is that a very special person passed away." But not
faded away.

"Eyes of the World"
This cd includes tasty originals along with old favorites. The musical
approach remains big band, but this cd is more aggressively creative and
is recommended over Blues for Allah. DL
"The Music Never Stopped" is similar to the Blues for Allah Project
version, though it's even longer. "Playin'" bookends most of the concert
like it did at so many Dead shows, but "Eyes of the World" gets the special
merit award. The first instrumental break features John Isley's tenor
sax, recalling Branford Marsalis' famous jamming with the Dead on the Without
A Net version. Gallant's bass solo takes the spotlight in the jam
after the second verse, the way Phil's did in the mid-'70s (c.f. One
From the Vault). After the third verse, Illuminati begins the "Stronger
Than Dirt Jam" a la circa '73/'74 (DP14). So the entire history
of "Eyes" is captured in this one version! "Music" later appeared on Dead
Delites Vol. 3. EL

The proceeds from the concerts and the cd go to the Bridge
School (Hillsborough, CA) which specializes in teaching communication
skills to children with severe speech and physical impairments.
Reviews: Entertainment Weekly (11/21/97) ...a
notch above the charity-CD pack, primarily because of surprises like Ministry's
reverant, tie-dyed cover of the Grateful Dead's 'Friend Of The Devil.'
AMG REVIEW: Neil Young
and his wife Pegi established the Bridge School -- an organization designed
to help develop communication for children who have severe speech and phystical
disabilities -- in the mid-'80s and every year, they held a fund-raising
acoustic concert for the foundation. These concerts became famous for the
richness and diversity of artists, so it's a little surprising that it
took nearly 10 years for a live charity album to emerge from these shows.
The Bridge School Concerts, Vol. 1 does not disappoint those who have eagerly
awaited the release of this record. Culled from concerts over the Bridge's
history, the album is filled with remarkable performances, from Young's
opening "I Am A Child" to Patti Smith's closing "People Have the Power."
Between those two tracks are 13 cuts from both classic rockers (Tom Petty,
Bonnie Raitt, Simon & Garfunkel, Don Henley, David Bowie, Pretenders)
and young guns (Beck, Ministry, Pearl Jam, Tracy Chapman), as well as those
that fall in between (Elvis Costello, Lovemongers, Nils Lofgren). Not everything
is first-rate, but moments like Beck's "It's All in Your Mind," Pearl Jam's
"Nothing Man," Chapman's "All That You Have Is Your Soul," Petty's "Shadow
of a Doubt," Bowie's "Heroes," a reunited Simon & Garfunkel's "America,"
Costello's "Alison" and Ministry's surprising cover
of the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil" make the endeavor a
cut above the average charity album. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine DL
Who would've guessed that industrial rock pioneers Ministry would turn
in a gentle, acoustic version of "FOTD"? Musically it's faithful to the
original, but they toy with the lyrics a bit:
Spent the night in Utah
In a cave up in the hills
Tryin' to find the devil
But I doubt I ever will

"Get Out of My Life," an Allen Toussaint tune, appears on the 1991 JGB

rather than '90. "Eyes" is a personal favorite DL

Deadhead on a moped riding down the street
Pulling out of Graceland. Who's he gonna meet?
Is he gonna see the doctor? Is he gonna catch the train?
Is he off to find some lost love he'll never see again?
Will we see him at the station standing in the rain?
Deadhead on a moped in the passing lane.
What's his destination? What's his final claim?
Will he find her in a commune somewhere in the west?
Did she join the corporate scene just like all the rest?
Did she set up shop somewhere, selling fringed vests?
Deadhead on a moped. Flying 'cross the tracks.
Coming down on Third Street and never looking back.
On the lookout for the woman who make him feel so good.
Stopping by the playground in his old neighborhood.
Hit the city limits faster than he should...
Deadhead on a moped pulling to the side.
Going through a school zone doing 45.
"Excuse me sir, but can I see your Driver's License please?"
"I'm sorry ma'am, but I haven't got one and I can't really pay the
fees."
It was then she took off her sunglasses to get a better look at his
face.
A sudden flash of recognition and gentle embrace.
Impounded the moped. Eventually was towed.
Squad car right beside it. Abandoned on the road.
Chopper and a sidecar in the traffic mix.
Headed down to 'Frisco on route 66.

Reviews: Amazon.com - Ramblin' Jack is a living legend, an essential
link between his old pal Woodie Guthrie and the folk singers of the '60s.
He takes that link one step further in this fantastic collection of duets
with an inspired selection of contemporary artists that include Emmylou
Harris, John Prine, Tom Waits, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Bob Weir and
others. Another living legend, Roy Rogers, sits at the production helm
and provides Friends with a quiet and loose feel that sounds less like
a bunch of stars holed up in the studio than friends jamming around the
kitchen table. [Includes] the rough and tumble "Louise" (with Tom Waits),
the soaring and beautiful "Rex's Blues" (with Emmylou Harris and Nanci
Griffith) and a tender rendition of the Grateful
Dead's "Friend of the Devil" (with Bob Weir) --Tod Nelson
AMG REVIEW: Ramblin'
Jack Elliott's first album for Hightone, Friends of Mine, is a thoroughly
enjoyable collection of duets produced by Roy Rogers. There's a loose,
intimate atmosphere on Friends of Mine that is instantly appealing, and
his selection of duet partners -- Emmylou Harris & Nanci Griffith,
Peter Rowan, Tom Waits, John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, Arlo Guthrie, Rosalie
Sorrels, Guy Clark and Bob Weir -- is smart,
since each singer helps bring out the best in Elliott. It's an excellent
latter-day effort from Elliott that confirms his status as a legendary
folk singer. -- Thom Owens DL

on Deadicated. EL

AMG REVIEW: A year
after their leader's death, the members of the Jerry Garcia Band decided
to continue performing, shortening their name to JGB. Their first release
as JGB, Welcome to Our World (For Members Only), follows in the
tradition of their recordings with Garcia, featuring expanded, jazzy reworkings
of such rock, folk, country, gospel, pop and Dead standards as "Knocking
on Heaven's Door," "Not Fade Away," "Tangled Up in Blue," "I Shall Be Released,"
"Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "I Got a Feeling" and "Dark Star." Recorded
live at the Los Angeles House of Blues on Halloween 1997, the album has
a loose, relaxed feel, and it's filled with great musicianship. It
keeps the spirit of Garcia's music alive, and that makes it worthwhile
for longtime fans of the Jerry Garcia Band and the Grateful Dead alike.
-- Stephen Thomas Erlewine

and a 8:11 version of "Dark Star." JS This "Dark
Star" sounds remarkably like the version on Live Dead (27 Feb. 1969).

Jerome John (Gallant) 1:41
An outstanding tribute to the Dead's 1977 Terrapin Station, this
is a bold interpretation which is likely to surprise even those familiar
with Joe's work with its warmth and subtlety. DL
Not even Joe Gallant's for earlier explorations of the Grateful Dead
material (1994, 1996,
1997, & 1997) could
have prepraed us for the shocking brilliance of Terrapin, his genre-bending
tribute to the Dead's 1977 Terrapin Station. Terrapin is
all over the map stylisically, but proves to be a consistent musical vision.
He restructures the Dead's side one, opening with "Passenger," a half-hiphop
/ half-swing rendition with vocals by longtime Deadhead and NBA hall-of-famer
BillWalton. "Dancin'" is fatihful to the Martha and the Vandellas orginal,
which is a sly wink at the Dead's notorious disco arrangement. Frank Zappa
alumnus, the incredible Ike Willis, sings "Estimated," which is faithful
to the original, with Joe's heavy orchestration thickening the mix. "Sunrise"
(the only Donna song ever covered) is sung by Lisa Shaw as if she were
on stage at a Las Vegas nightclub, and "Samson" is a gospel rave up. Gallant's
"Terrapin Suite" is as mindblowing as the original. "Lady with a Fan"
resembles the Dead's studio version - Joe's orchestration notwithstanding.
But tradition is radically broken in the "Terrapin Station" section. Whether
live or in the studio, Jerry crooing "inspiration" was always a BIG MOMENT.
Gallant goes in the opposite direction. After building to a massive climax,
the song does a 180 into a mellow country interlude. "Inspiration..."
sings Rob Wolfson with no fanfare whatsoever. The "Region I," Region II,"
and "Region III" showcase improvisational Illuminati insanity. "Region
IV," a hilarious addition, features Pat Boone(!) speak-singing a few lines.
A string quartet accompanies the heavenly voice of the Roches' Maggie Roche
during "China Doll," followed by Gallant's solo instrumental tribute, "Jerome
John." EL

"Weather Report Suite, part 2: Let It Grow"
Marc Greilsamer, via Amazon.com: Without offense to the often-brilliant
lyricist Robert Hunter, it's always the singing and the words that ring
hollow when another band tries to replicate the Grateful Dead experience.
With all those pesky words out of the way, Jazz Is Dead are free to lay
down 62 minutes of sweeping funk fusion. Not merely a pale imitator, this
ferocious quintet adds to the creative process by injecting its own adventurous
spirit into the Dead's music, not to mention an assortment of masterful
chops. Here the group tackles 1973's Wake of the Flood, one of the
Dead's most nuanced records, and the musicians themselves seem to delight
in the music's subtle twists (check out bassist Alphonso Johnson's cascading
lines in "Row Jimmy"). Even the forgotten "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away"
becomes a joyous, organ-fueled romp thanks to T Lavitz's keyboard work.
Guitarist Jimmy Herring handles both the restrained vocal parts and the
frenzied leads with aplomb. And besides, any chance to hear one of Bill
Monroe's old Blue Grass Boys (fiddler Vassar Clements,
who appeared on the original album) soar atop the throbbing bass of a former
Weather Report member is worth the price of admission.
"Basic tracks recorded at: the Fox Theater, Boulder, CO 13 & 14
April, 1999; Maritime Hall, SF, CA, 23 &24 April 1999." Includes Vassar
Clements (violin), DJ Godchaux (vocal intros), Steve Kimock (guitar), and
Derek Trucks (slide guitar). More jazzed exploration of tunes you know.
The Eyes and WRS are particularly delicious! These are the only covers
of Half-step, Sing Your Blues, Here Comes Sunshine, and WRS>Let it Grow
on this list. Donna Jean's vocal intros to Half-Step & Here Comes Sunshine
are actually pretty decent. See also... DL

One Of These Days

"Friend of the Devil"
Tony Rice, Larry Rice, Chris Hillman, and Herb Pederson have excellent
resumés. Hillman worked with the Flying Burrito Brothers and the
Byrds, of course. Larry and Tony held joint membership in the acclaimed
J.D. Crow's New South, and Herb Pederson, a veteran of John Denver and
Linda Ronstadt sessioneering, played with Chris Hillman in the equally
lauded Desert Rose Band. Sprinkled lightly with a bluegrass flavor, Rice,
Rice, Hillman & Pederson is predominantly a gentle and moody folk album
reflecting the varied tastes of its principals. Comfortable
favorites like the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil," Delaney
& Bonnie's "Never Ending Song of Love," and Mike Brewer's lovely "Hearts
Overflowing" co-exist next to cozy originals like Hillman's blue collar
ode "Moment of Glory" and the Rice Brothers' brisk "Side Effects of Love."
The performances are understated and truly musician-ly, drawing from a
full spectrum of tone, tempo, and color. Tony Rice's tasteful acoustic
guitar, which underlies Larry Rice's decorative mandolin, forms a perfect
bed for Hillman and Pederson's harmonies -- themselves delicate, expressive,
and perfectly wed. --Bob Gulla (via CDNOW)

"Dead Heat"
Phil Salazar, who played fiddles on the 1997 Pickin'
On The Dead, recruited his buddy Jon McEuen from their band String
Lizards to follow that bluegrass tribute to the Dead with "an acoustic
pickin' feast inspired by some of Jerry's finest work, spanning his entire
musical career." (Jon McEuen) Thus the birth of this, "The World's First
Musical Tribute to Jerry Garcia," cd. Recorded in the summer of 1998,
it contains a wide variety of tunes from Jerry's career (though only three
of the eleven tracks, "Shady Grove," "Pig In A Pen," and "Don't Let Go,"
were not performed by the Dead). Four tracks (2, 5, 8 & 10) include
vocals, the balance being instrumentals, a mix which works very well.
The final tune (written by Salazar and John McEuen) is the sole original
on the cd and makes one wish they'd included more!
"Shady Grove" appears on the Garcia/Grisman cd.
"Pig In A Pen," a 1937 classic by Arthur Smith, appears on two of the Old
and In the Way cds. "Don't Let Go" appears on Jerry's
double live cd.
This is actually the second effort dedicated to Jerry (here's
the first), though the first was a laserdisc and therefore not terribly
accessible. Other JG covers (and JG-inspired covers of covers) include
Robert Hunter's 1980 and 1990
versions of "Reuben and Cherise," Slipknot's "The
Harder They Come" and "Tangled Up In Blue," Solar Circus'
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," Toots Hibbert's "Catfish
John," The Workingmen's "Stop That Train," Joe
Gallant's and Juggling Suns' "Love In The Afternoon,"
Jake's Leg's "Get Out of My Life," and The
Schwag's Dear Prudence," not to mention the JGB's 1998
release.
GDM also markets this cd (as listed above) and had this to say (GD
Alamanac 7:1): A tribute to Jerry Garcia, fiddler Phil Salazar and guitarist
Jonathan McEuen have assembled a cast of top-flight pickers and singers
(including Jonathan's dad, multi-instrumental virtuoso and Nitty Gritty
Dirt Band founder John McEuen) for this fine collection of songs written
by or associated with Jerry, played in some of the American roots music
styles (esp. bluegrass) that Jerry loved best. DL

From Amazon: Sex Mob mastermind
Steven Bernstein enjoys the distinction of being the world's best (read:
only) slide-trumpet player. As musical director for John Lurie's Lounge
Lizards, Bernstein developed his trumpet skills as well as an offbeat sense
of humor and a rampant unpredictability. On their second CD, Sex Mob mixes
raucous free jazz and inventive original compositions with instrumental
versions of songs by folks like Kurt Cobain ("About a Girl"), Duke Ellington
("The Mooch"), Jerry Garcia ("Ripple"), and
the Rolling Stones ("Ruby Tuesday"). Assimilating Dixieland jazz, modern
funk, hip-hop, dub, and a myriad of rock influences, Bernstein, alto saxophonist
Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr, and drummer Kenny Wollesen engage
in a kaleidoscopic tour of the postmodern world. Freewheeling and displaying
plenty of soul, this is solid entertainment. --Mitch Meyers AA

And it's like a bad trip in hell
Stranded and broke
Twenty years in this cell
It's like a life up in smoke
Once I sought vision
With a sweet gypsy tribe
It was about feeling
The pulse of a vibe
And sure I smoked kind bud
Did windowpane
And soaked up the beauty
Of the warm summer rain
I slept in the shadows

Watched the moon shine
Felt the breeze in the dark
The whole world was mine
But I lived for a song

Includes:

"Ripple" 4:50
From Amazon: Though often praised
as a songwriter, Jimmie Dale Gilmore mostly considers himself a "song lover."
Thus it should come as no surprise that ten of the baker's dozen songs
on One Endless Night are covers. Nor should it surprise anyone that
Gilmore's distinctive plaintive twang so effectively conveys his passion
for these songs. On his first record in nearly four years, Gilmore looks
to his fellow contemplative Texans to provide much of the material here:
songs by Townes Van Zandt, Walter Hyatt, and Willis Alan Ramsey join a
pair from fellow Flatlander Butch Hancock. Add to that songs by "outsiders"
like John Hiatt, Jesse Winchester, the Grateful Dead
(a lovely reading of "Ripple"), and even Kurt Weill (a spooky reading
of "Mack the Knife"), and you get a sense of who Gilmore is as an artist:
entrenched in country music, he also has an open and curious mind, a wandering
spirit, and an affection for timeless melodies. Boasting an assortment
of guests, including coproducer Buddy Miller (another firmly rooted freethinker),
Emmylou Harris, and Jim Lauderdale, One Endless Night is as vast
and dusty, as soothing and warm as the high Texas plains. --Marc Greilsamer

"The Music Lives On"
I was just a young boy first time I heard him play
The music went straight to my heart, I fell in love that day
In the concert hall, my living room, or driving in my car
I never heard a sweeter sound than his voice and his guitar
He sang of heart’s desire, hard times, and being strong
And I could always feel the love he gave to every song
On the day he left this world, I sat down and I cried
But now I just give thanks for all the joy he left behind
Chorus
So let’s go dancing in the rain
‘Cause even though he’s gone
The gift he gave won’t fade away
The Music Lives On
I finished school, I hit the road, had fun, made lots of friends
He was the soundtrack to a time I thought would never end
Now the stage is empty and the spotlight has gone out
But I’ll pop in this old cassette and I’ll hear him sing out loud

Neat vibes from San Fran. Lyrics:
I'm a Deadhead and my dog's name's Jed,
I'm a Deadhead and my dog's name is Jed.
My dog's on a rope and I don't use soap,
My dog's on a rope and I don't use no soap.
I got dreads and Guatamalan threads,
I got dreads and Guata-malan threads.
I come from Bergen County New Jersey,
Head west and sleep in a doorway on Haight Street.
I save all the pennies I can find,
Arrange 'em on the sidewalk in the shape of a peace sign.
I sell crystals and beaded rocks,
Jed here beside me in a cardboard box.
'Cuz I'm a Deadhead and my dog's name's Jed,
I'm a Deadhead and my dog's name is Jed.
I stay at yer parents' house for free,
Bring fifteen friends, hope ya got cable TV.
Daddy bought me a Saab and a gold card, too,
When the Saab broke down, Daddy bought me a Su-ba-ru.
'Cuz Dad, money means nuthin', give me yours,
Money means nuthin', give me all of yours.
I sell cold beers in the parking lot,
My inventory confiscated by the cops.
I got beaten up by five skinheads,
They blacked my eye and they kicked my dog named Jed.

Parodies:
I Will Not Buy - (WBCN, Boston) In 1987, after "In The Dark" was released,
WBCN in Boston produced a parody of "Touch of Grey"
called "I Will Not Buy". It was used to open a segment on the Ken Shelton
show called the "Mighty Lunch Hour", in which every day he played some
sort of parody of a popular song.
Mayor Barry: Tryin' To Campaign - Paul Harris (WCXR, Alexandria, VA,
(703) 683-3000)) after Washington, D.C. Mayor Marion Barry was arrested
on drug charges, a two and half minute long parody song was produced, using
the Dead's melody to "Casey Jones": 'Trying to campaign,
High on cocaine...'. Produced in February, 1990 and aired only on WCXR.
Dr. Ruth sang "Touch of Grey" on VH1's Karaoke
Cabaret 3 September 1999, 10pm. DL
From: "Jeff T." <jeff@aol.com>
Subject: Re: Dr. Ruth sings Touch Of Grey!
Date: Fri, 3 Sep 1999 10:19:59 -0700
Happened to catch it....
Quite hilarious, actually. She didn't really have a feel for the chorus,
but hearing her read the verses was really funny. The "touching" part was
when she got the whole crowd to join in for the final chorus, and the crowd
really knew the song, so she caught on. Huge cheers, etc.
But never ever watch this show...it was pretty bad, aside from this
one moment of glory.
We will survive!
