This panoramic visual delight from the Music Center Courtyard inspired Antoine Predock, the Architect for the Music Center to write the following statement regarding his achievement: The poetic topographic elements of the UCSC campus--ravine, meadow, and rocky outcropping--have been organized in a choreographed sequence to form a music village where the great meadow meets the edge of the redwood forest. Composed about the existing solitary oak tree and the sweeping vistas of the Monterey Bay, the programmatic components of the Music Center have been stretched and molded to create a series of processional discoveries, courtyards, and framed views. Built from concrete, masonry block, and steel, the Music Center is designed to achieve and integrate the highest standards in acoustic and audio visual technologies within the matrices of durability, economy, and delight. The interiors of the building have been sculpted for acoustic performance and aesthetics. The Music Center represents an alchemical transformation of the architectural elements into a musical analogy. --Antoine Predock |
