Compact Disc manufacturing standards were established jointly by
Philips and Sony, and were first introduced in October 1982. Currently (August
1998), they are:
- Red
Book - Compact Disc-Digital Audio (CD-DA).
This is the audio CD that you buy in a record store.
- Blue Book - Enhanced CD, or CD+ (CD-plus). This is the format
for hybrid audio CDs with additional CD-ROM
software.
Some sources also cite Blue Book as the standard for Laser Disc.

The Enhanced CD database offers a
listing of currently available Enhanced CDs.
- Green
Book - CD Interactive, or Interactive CD (CD-i).
A CD format introduced by Philips that allows interactive multimedia applications
to be run on a special CD-i player which is attached to a television set.
- Yellow
Book - Compact Disc Read-Only Memory (CD-ROM).
The standard for the physical format of CDs to be used for information storage.
- Orange
Book - The standard for recordable CDs (CD-R).
- White
Book - The standard for Video CDs.
