FUSE, an exciting group exhibition featuring new work by UCSC arts faculty, opens at the Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery on Wednesday, April 11. The selected work explores the influence of digital media and technology on the artists’ practice. This annual exhibition is an opportunity for both students and the Santa Cruz community to see the current work of UCSC’s visual arts faculty. A selection of work from FUSE will travel to Japan as FUSE / FURERU in collaboration with two university art galleries: Zokei Gallery and University Museum, Tokyo Zokei University; and Gallery AUBE, Kyoto University of Art and Design. In exchange, the Sesnon Gallery will host an exhibition of faculty work from the Tokyo and Kyoto universities in fall 2008.

Dee Hibbert-Jones, assistant professor specializing in sculpture, installation and public art notes, “My work for FUSE brings California sprawl to Japan and Kyoto's to California. Digital technology has allowed me to extend my creative practice and altered my methods of exhibition. I can perform work on one continent and have it web streamed back to an audience on another. Digital technology not only extends the audience for my work, but also allows me opportunities for greater material investigation in my art practice.”

The exhibition runs April 11 through May 12, with a public reception on Wednesday, April 11 from 5–7:00pm. The gallery is located at Porter College and admission is free. A panel discussion including several of the artists and moderated by Sesnon Director/Curator Shelby Graham will be held on Tuesday, May 1 at 6:15pm at the UCSC Media Theater located at Baskin Performing Arts. Parking for this event is $2.00.

Gallery hours are Tuesday–Saturday noon to 5:00pm. The gallery is located at Porter College and is wheelchair accessible. Admission is free and parking is free on Saturdays. Parking permits are available weekdays at the main campus entrance kiosk for $5.00/day and $2.00 at the Porter College lot between 5:00–8:30pm for special events. Group tours are available by appointment at (831) 459-3606. For further information and directions please visit our Web site at http://arts.ucsc.edu/sesnon.
