Irwin Scholars
The William Hyde and Susan Benteen Irwin Scholarship Fund was
established in 1986 and has grown to over $700,000 generating
fifteen annual merit scholarships furthering the art education
of select UC Santa Cruz art students. “These scholarships are
considered as recognition given by the faculty to the top 5% of
the program,” comments Norman Locks, Chair of the Art Department.
The Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery’s annual exhibition of Irwin
Scholars features painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture,
installation, and mixed media. 2003 Recipients are: Erica Allen,
Mike Cross, Julia DeGuzman, Eric Deschenes, Michelle Lee, Brooke
Lober, Tim McLynch, Carrie Maseredjian, John Olsen, Kim Seiferheld,
Kasey Smith, John Swanson, Annie Tucker, Azucena Varela, and Claire
Woods. The 2003 Irwin Scholarship exhibition is on view in the
Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery from May 21 through June 14. The
opening reception is Wednesday, May 21 from 5–7 p.m. and will
include an awards ceremony. For more information on the Irwin

Gallery is located at Porter College, UCSC. Gallery hours are
Tuesday–Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. The gallery is wheelchair accessible
and admission is free. Parking is free on weekends. Group tours
