Katherine Smith Performed on April 18, 2003- the one-year anniversary with my boyfriends Michael Berger- They Do Not Love That Do Not Show Their Love was conceived of as an exploration of the role that intimacy plays in a loving and committed relationship. The necklace that serves as the performance’s focal point is made of the most intimate and personal materials and is worn on one of the most intimate and personal places of the body (when was the last time that someone other that your lover touched your neck?). Through the creation/ wearing of the necklace, Michael and I not only allowed the boundaries between ourselves to be opened up and transgressed in the name of love but we invited the viewer into our home, our lives, our anniversary and our relationship to bear witness to our act of intimacy. |
