Biography

Erika Suderburg is an artist and writer who works in film, video, bookworks, installation and photography. Her work has been exhibited internationally including: the Pacific Film Archives-Berkeley, the Millennium Film Workshop-New York, Capp Street Projects-San Francisco, the Museum of Modern Art-New York, The American Film Institute-Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art-Los Angeles, Kunstlerhaus-Stuttgart, Grazer Kunstverein-Austria, the Collective for Living Cinema-New York, Fukai International Video Biennale-Japan, New Langton Arts-San Francisco, International Video Festival-Bonn, the Long Beach Museum of Art, Simon Watson Gallery-New York, and Trial Balloon Gallery-New York. She has been on the faculties of Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, California Institute of the Arts, and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She is currently an Associate Professor at the University of California-Riverside.

She has worked as a curator and consultant for the Public Broadcasting Corporation where her most recent project was a program which highlighted recent documentaries that addressed the collapse of the Eastern Bloc in Europe. She has written art, performance, television and film criticism over the past ten years and is co-author of Resolutions: Contemporary Video Practices, published in 1996 by the University of Minnesota Press. She has written on the image of Queer youth in Broadcast Television "Real TV Queer" which is included in the anthology Between the Sheets, In the Streets. She is currently involved in editing a volume of critical essays on Installation and Site Specific Art which will be published by the University of Minnesota Press in 1998.

Erika enjoys: gardening, Marcel Broodthaers, swimming, the Alps, cats, the 18th century, the Museum of Jurassic Technology, Nina Hagen, really good raspberry tarts, Andrei Tarkovsky and natural history museums. Contrary to vicious rumors she has never been involved in cactus wrangling and has never served time for any offense. She is currently at work on a feature length video entitled Los Angeles: Topographies, Histories and Remnants which she hopes to complete sometime in her lifetime.
