Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band

The Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band (Karlton Hester, director) in performance with Denise Perrier (February 2004)
  Karlton E. Hester
As founding director for the recently established Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band, the tradition of festivals has evolved into several smaller sets of performances on a monthly basis, with featured guests artists such as John Handy, Denise Perrier, Domu Africa, and others (2004/05 season) and a musical exchange with and tour to Ethiopia (2006).

The Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band was established to honor the legacy of African American art, culture and life in San Francisco's Fillmore area. Its intention is to play a role in the economic revitalization of the Historic Fillmore Jazz District as a new destination point in San Francisco. It has performed at festivals for audiences of over 7,000 people.

The nineteen-piece Big Band made its debut at the annual Fillmore Street Jazz Festival in San Francisco, July 2003. The Big Band under the direction of Dr. Karlton Hester brings together most of the top Jazz musicians and embodies some of the greatest music educators in the northern California Bay Area. This year’s featured guest artists include saxophonist John Handy, bassist James Leary, vibraphonist Herb Gibson and many other illustrious performers.
